Sumario:An interview with Masood Tariq, the new Asian-Pacific president of Nortel Networks, one of Canada's hottest firms, is provided. Nortel enjoys a lock on 43 percent of the global market for fibre-optic networks and is a major player in wireless communications. In discussing the key issues confronting the regional telecoms industry, Tariq considers whether the development of third generation (3G) wireless Internet services in Asia will be driven mainly by demand for data or fancier handsets; where wireless application protocol (WAP) fits in; what Nortel has learned from the troubles encountered by WAP; whether the industry can keep up spending on the new network infrastructure and whether he is worried about sales leveling off; and Nortel's competitive advantage in Asia.
