They contend that single-industry towns are at the forefront of extreme spatial and temporal disruptions that are both creative and destructive—these towns revel in rapid growth when a new resource is discovered, but are abandoned just as quickly when the resources run out or prices drop. They use a case study of the forest-industry town of Port Alberni, British Columbia, Canada to exemplify Innis's general cyclonic scheme that unites space, time, and staples production.
