| Sumario: | A commentary on two articles that appeared in this issue by Mizrahl et al. and Martinez et al. In their articles, Mizrahl et al. and Martinez et al. studied aspects of the dopamine neurotransmitter system. Mizrahl et al. found that higher drug occupancy (blockade) of dopamine receptors in the brain was linked strongly to higher ratings of negative subjective states on a self-report scale. Martinez et al. detected a modest increase in dopamine receptors but a sizable reduction in dopamine release in response to amphetamine in subjects with a history of cocaine dependence. The writers suggest that that the role of dopamine in emotional tone is a key feature of both studies. They contend that the more that psychiatrists can learn about the dopaminergic effects of existing agents, the better they will be able to meet the needs of patients who expose themselves to or are exposed by psychiatrists to dopaminergic drugs. |
