| Sumario: | The article discusses the investigation by the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) of two prominent gay rights organizations in the 1950s, the Mattachine Society and ONE, Inc. Despite the former being seen as conservative and the latter radical, both groups are seen as having had success in their gay advocacy work despite the government investigations. The evolving nature of the FBI investigations is discussed, including early concern with possible Communist involvement by either group, and later concern with obscenity. |
