| Sumario: | Within the flame of the mediaeval conception of history, Bede's Historia ecelesiastica gentis Anglorum is a remarkable work as far as sources and traditions are concerned. This paper will focus on a mediaeval Christian exemplum dealing with the subject of faith in God's mercy, developed following popular religious beliefs in the supernatural. The availability of two Old English versions -- from the Alfredian and the Ælfrician corpus -- of the chapters under analysis allows a useful examination of the vernacular reception of the content and the literary genre of the text. |
