The increasing popularity of stereoscopic 3D motion pictures, such as the film "Avatar," is noted, and the possibility of 3D television is discussed. Researchers such as Kurt Akeley of Microsoft Research Silicon Valley and Martin Banks of the University of California, Berkeley, are quoted discussing the visual strain which can be caused by 3D systems. This is said to be the result of focusing the eyes on a flat screen while viewing images that seem to be closer or farther away. Research aimed at overcoming this problem is described.
