Formation of micelles by interaction of biosurfactants with hydrophobic compounds such as hydrocarbons is favorable for bioremediation processes in contaminated sites with this kind of compounds because of they improve the contact of microorganisms and plants to absorb, transform and degrade organic contaminants. Therefore biosurfactants become valuable compounds in bioremediation technologies due to safety and biodegradability, what makes them friendly to the environment. In this work we present the results on biosurfactants production by four strains of nitrogen free living fixing bacteria (NFB) isolated from soils impacted with hydrocarbons when grown in kerosene as a sole carbon source. Their production of biosurfactants was evaluated by Superficial Tension (TS), and the Emulsification Index (IE). Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC), and Pseudomonas biosurfactants were used to identify the rhamnolipids produced by the NFB. Productivity of biosurfactants between several NFB strains was variable and attributed the metabolic specificity of each strain. From the isolated bacteria, two strains, the CA, and the CB, showed the highest productivity of biosurfactant: 0.35 g/L, and 0.5 g/L respectively. The TLC analysis showed that these biosurfactants belong to rhamnolipid polymeric compounds. NFB strains isolated from oil contaminated soils have the capability to remove hydrocarbons probably because produce biosurfactants. These bacteria can be useful for bioremediation technologies.
