Echard was notable for writing the first single-author histories of England in the 18th century "The history of England from the first entrance of Julius Caesar and the Romans to the end of the reign of James I," (London, 1707) and the "History of England," vols 2 and 3 (London, 1718). His Correspondence with Jacob Tonson the younger in 1719 and 1720 shows the friendship between the men and gives insights into the professional relationship between an esteemed author and his publisher. Letters from Echard to Tonson the younger dated the December 23, 1719 and December 30, 1719 are reproduced.
