        After clarifying how Darwin understood natural selection and common ancestry, I consider how the two concepts are related in his theory. I argue that common ancestry has an evidential priority. For Darwin, arguments about natural selection often make use of the assumption of common ancestry, whereas defending common ancestry does not require the assumption that natural selection has been at work. In fact, Darwin held that the key evidence for common ancestry comes from characters whose evolution is not caused by natural selection. This raises the question of why Darwin puts natural selection first and foremost in the Origin.
        Tras aclarar cómo entendía Darwin la selección natural y el ancestro común, estudio la relación entre ambos conceptos en su teoría. Argumento que el ancestro común posee prioridad evidencial. Para Darwin, los argumentos sobre la selección natural utilizan frecuentemente el supuesto del ancestro común, mientras que la defensa del ancestro común no exige el supuesto de que la selección natural haya estado funcionando. De hecho, Darwin sostiene que la evidencia clave para el ancestro común proviene de caracteres cuya evolución no ha sido causada por selección natural. Esto plantea la cuestión de por qué en el Origen Darwin antepone primero y de manera especial la selección natural.
