| Sumario: | This article discusses the ethnic, cultural, and regional identity of Appalachians and people of Appalachian heritage who live outside of the region. A place-based approach to creating an Appalachian identity that is based on family history is considered as is the fact that not everyone living in Appalachia was born there. It is also noted that multi-generational descendants of people who had lived in Appalachia may still claim that as their identity. A cultural attribute-based approach to Appalachian identity, which considers regional characteristics that are inherent to a number of Appalachians is also considered. The results of a telephone interview found that some people born in Appalachia did not identify themselves as Appalachians nor did people who had ancestors who had lived there.
