Examples of grid computing projects such as Naregi, Egee, and TeraGrid are discussed. TeraGrid, started by the National Science Foundation in 2001, can store over 30 petabytes of data. It had some 5,000 active users at the end of 2009. Matthew Heinzel, director of TeraGrid’s grid infrastructure group, is quoted commenting on the initiative.
