Their inadequate training and irregular lives supposedly resulted in moral laxity among the island's inhabitants. Until now, we have lacked the primary resources necessary to evaluate such assertions. By drawing upon the parish baptismal, marriage, and death registers of San Felipe the Apostle parish in Arecibo, Puerto Rico, it is possible to identify the priests who served in various capacities throughout the years 1708 to 1791. Moreover, the social origins as well as their educational background can be examined as a means to (re)assess the negative image of Puerto Rican clergy. Within the broader context of the eighteenth century, the lives, training and career paths of Puerto Rican priests were typical of those clergy elsewhere in the Americas. Las investigaciones que se concentran y/o abarcan el tema del clero puertorriqueño nos presentan una imagen de clérigos inadecuadamente preparados y afirman que hubo escasez de éstos a través de la Isla. La falta de preparación adecuada y el hecho que llevaban una vida irregular supuestamente ocasionó una relajación de las costumbres morales en la población. Hasta ahora, carecíamos de las fuentes primarias para aseverar estas afirmaciones. A base de los registros parroquiales de bautismo, matrimonio y defunción de la parroquia San Felipe Apóstol de Arecibo es posible identificar a los clérigos que sirvieron a través de los años 1708 y 1791. Además se puede examinar su procedencia y origen social tanto como su preparación vocacional para así enmendar la imagen prevaleciente del clero puertorriqueño. Dentro del contexto más amplio del siglo XVIII, la vida, la preparación y la carrera eclesiástica de los clérigos puertorriqueños era muy parecida a la del clero en otras partes de las Américas. Les études conduites sur le clergé portoricain décrivent des prêtres mal formés au service de paroisses en «sous effectif» sur l'étendue de l'île. Leur manque de formation ainsi que leur niveau de vie irrégulière a prétendument entraîné un laxisme moral parmi les habitants de l'île. Jusqu'à présent, les ressources primaires nécessaires pour évaluer ces affirmations font défaut. Avec l'appui des registres paroissiaux de baptêmes, de mariages et de décès de la paroisse de San Felipe Apôtre d'Arecibo, Porto Rico, il est possible d'identifier les prêtres qui ont occupé divers postes au cours des années 1708 à 1791. En outre, les origines sociales ainsi que leur formation peuvent être examinées comme un moyen de (re)évaluer l'image négative du clergé portoricain.
