Although these tools and data are becoming width available and easy to use, it is critical to understand both the content of the data and the capability and limitations of the statistical tools employed in order to maintain the quality of social work research. Model specification refers to the selection of variables that are included in an analysis. Variables may also be included in a statistical model if they are thought to by effect modifiers. Most statistical models and tests make assumptions about the generation process under study. Even the statistical package used should be noted since there are sometimes differences in how these programs work and in the output they produce.
