Summary:The article describes advances in research on brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). These systems translate the brain’s electrical signals into outputs which control computers, in order to enable people without muscle control to interact with the world. BCIs can even allow users to communicate without using the peripheral nervous system. Since they can function without neuromuscular control, BCIs are an ideal assistive computer technology for people with major neuromuscular disorders, such as cerebral palsy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or spinal cord injury.
