Sumario:The article discusses energy efficiency as an increasingly significant limiter of microprocessor performance. Moore’s Law, which predicts continuing exponential gains in microprocessor performance, is mentioned. An argument is presented that in order for Moore's Law to hold true, radical changes in computer architecture and software will be necessary. Architectures that use heterogeneous transistors to incorporate application-customized hardware are predicted to outperform homogeneous parallel systems. An overview of the history of microprocessor performance advances, using examples of Intel products, is also provided.
