According to the author, newspaper accounts of confrontations between men and women in the city’s nightclubs and cafés show that involvement in a scandal could enhance men’s reputation among other men. It is suggested that these men were involved in constructing a new form of masculinity which was connected to Odessa’s criminal underworld and local conceptions of the city as a unique place.
