Summary:The article discusses a means of efficiently managing power use in virtualized data centers by means of what the authors term power-aware dynamic application placement. Research indicates that for various applications including electronic commerce and Internet proxy clusters, server utilization rates can be as low as 11%. The authors show how power -aware dynamic application placement can both reduce underutilization of servers and combat rising energy costs in data centers by migrating applications.
