Introduction: the critically ill patient is at high risk of developing malnutrition and, according to the literature, these patients receive only between 63 and 71% of the proper caloric intake. This may result from a bunch of causes; one of these reasons could be related to nurses' enteral nutrition management. The aim of our study was to identify if nurses' knowledge of enteral nutrition management was adequate through the administration of a questionnaire adapted from previous experiences found in the literature (11). Methods: we administered a questionnaire, composed of 51 questions, in order to analyze nurses' management and know-how of enteral nutrition in all nurses working in two general intensive care units (TIA and TIB). Results 79.7% of the 75 questionnaires has been filled in (76.5% in the TI A e 82.8% in the TI B). The mean total score is 111 (IC 95% 108.17-113.82), with a median of 111, interquartile range, IQR, 106-118. Nurses working in TI A had a mean score of 114.15, (IC 95% 109.8-118.4), while nurses working in TIB 108.66 (IC 95% 104.9-112.4). Conclusions the mean scores obtained indicate a valid knowledge on enteral nutrition of the nurses working in our two general intensive care units. The results also stressed the lack of a nutritional team and of regularly updated protocols on enteral nutrition.
