| Sumario: | The article looks at the practices of the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) with regard to domestic security. According to the author, the FBI conflates dissent with terrorism and since the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks has increasingly regarded street protest with suspicion. It is suggested that the FBI's increased use of surveillance, particularly of domestic dissenters, is a threat to citizens' rights and to U.S. democratic society as a whole. Details related to the history of FBI surveillance are presented. Topics discussed include the U.S. Counter Intelligence Program (COINTELPRO), nonviolent protest, and the U.S. Patriot Act.
