Sumario:The article examines several economic and social problems associated with the increasing population of haredi, or ultra-Orthodox, Jews in Israel. Particular focus is given to incidents of discrimination against women and girls by haredim men, including the elementary school student Naama Margolese and the Israeli Defense Force (IDF) soldier Doron Matalon. Social conflict and violence in the town of Beit Shemesh, Israel is profiled and the impact of the haredi lifestyle on the military draft for the IDF is analyzed.
