The author highlights the study of contemporary city plans, diagrams, and paintings that depict the increasing urban renewal projects that were undertaken at the time. She also comments on the influence of the colonial administrators on these development projects, including the reorganization of the city into cuarteles (quarters), the reform of parishes, and the introduction of censuses.
