We begin with an analysis of “El libro del obrero,” published in 1862 by intellectuals of the Catalan bourgeoisie (Ceferino Tresserra, Victor Balaguer, Antonio Altadill, among others) and given to Catalan industrial workers that participated in the worker choirs of José Anselmo Clavé. We show that in this book a political rhetoric is deployed with the purpose of restricting the economic, political and cultural autonomy of the working class. “El libro del obrero” contains the educational project of the 19th century intellectual for the organized choirs of the working class, and it is presented as a pedagogical manual thanks to which the worker could acquire behavior adapted to the bourgeoisie version of the social order. Far from being a road to emancipation for the workers, the publication and distribution of this type of manual is a recourse used by the intellectuals to protect their own status within the space of urban representation, at which time they created their philanthropic personalities. Este articulo investiga ciertos proyectos filantrópicos dirigidos a la clase obrera en el siglo XLX español: tradicionalmente estudiados y concebidos como movimientos de liberación y emancipación, mostramos sus estrategias para insertar al obrero dentro de un orden socio-económico burgués. Partimos del análisis de El libro del obrero, publicado en 1862 por intelectuales de la burguesía catalana (Ceferino Tresserra, Victor Balaguer, Antonio Altadill, entre otros) y regalado a los obreros industriales catalanes que participaban en los coros de obreros de José Anselmo Clavé. Demostramos que en este libro se despliega una retórica bibliopolítica con el fin de restringir la autonomía económica, política y cultural de la clase trabajadora. El libro del obrero contiene el proyecto educativo del intelectual decimonónico para la clase obrera organizada en coros, y se presenta como un manual pedagógico gracias al cual el obrero puede adquirir una conducta adaptada a la versión burguesa del orden social.
