| Sumario: | The article views TÕnu 'nnepalu's 'exile texts' that describe feelings of an Estonian/ East European person in West European space and time. It can be seen how spatial distance takes also the shape of temporal distance, as though East and West were situated at different points on timeline making possible certain 'travels in time'. Places where 'nnepalu or his protagonists live in voluntary exile, become places of anamnesis where one can remember his proper identity; and remembering means in that case also 'true seeing' and 'coming to mind'. So an interesting figure is created-because Estonia lies 'in the past', it can properly come to mind as a memory. Finally the article tries to point to a possibility to interpret the whole Estonian culture as an essentially 'exile culture', because in some sense the initiation place of modern Estonian identity has always been 'abroad'.
