        Bilophila wadsworthia is an asaccharolytic, Gram-negative, bile-resistant, catalase-positive bacillus that is often urease positive and able to reduce nitrate to nitrite. Growth is stimulated by taurine, which is a cysteine derivative and major organic solute in humans. Bilophila have been recovered from specimens of patients with perforated appendicitis, otitis external, brain abscesses, soft tissue abscesses, from joint fluid, and from blood. In addition, Bilophila has been isolated from fecal material. This bacterium has been linked in various infections in humans, but it is an anaerobic bacteria with slow growth, making it difficult to cultivate and identify in the laboratory. It is also worth noting that Bilophila has significant resistance to antibiotics traditionally used in hospitals for the treatment of anaerobic infections. These reasons make it necessary to review and analyze the clinical significance of this anaerobic bacteria, to make the correct future diagnoses, and to acquire and report epidemiologic data from Latin-American hospitals on this and other anaerobic infections.
        Bilophila wadsworthia es bacilo Gram negativo, asacarolítico, resistente a la bilis, catalasa positivo, ureasa positivo y capaz de reducir los nitratos a nitritos. Crece estimulado por la taurina, el cual es un derivado de cisteína y uno de los mayores solutos orgánicos en el humano. Bilophila ha sido aislada de diferentes procesos infecciosos como de apendicitis perforadas, otitis externa, abscesos cerebrales, abscesos de tejidos blandos, del líquido articular y de la sangre. Además, también se ha recuperado de materia fecal. Por lo que se ha visto vinculado en diferentes infecciones en el humano, pero al ser una bacteria anaerobia y de muy lento crecimiento es difícil de cultivar e identifi car a nivel de laboratorio. Por otro lado, se ha demostrado que posee una importante resistencia contra los antibióticos tradicionalmente más utilizados en los hospitales para el tratamiento de infecciones bacterianas. Es por esto que es necesario realizar una revisión y un análisis de la importancia clínica de esta bacteria anaerobia para, en un futuro, realizar el correcto diagnóstico y conocer datos epidemiológicos en hospitales latinoamericanos y otras infecciones por bacterias anaerobias.
