Sumario:Drawing on a combination of personal experience and textual evidence from the biblical and qur'anic traditions, this essay explores the notion that, even with an acknowledgment of those features that set Christianity and Islam apart as distinctive spiritual paths, both doctrinally and practically, the shared goal of imitatio Dei serves as a unifying theme in light of which the emulation of Jesus Christ in Christianity and of the Prophet Muhammad in Islam can be seen and experienced as endeavors that are complementary rather than mutually exclusive. Particular emphasis is placed on the importance of the Islamic mystical tradition and the distinction it draws between the divine attributes of beauty (jamāl) and majesty (falāI).
