Sumario:The article discusses Southern U.S. race relations in connection with the region's political conservatism. The author is primarily concerned with the relatively high amount of racial intolerance and lack of support for racial equality found in the Southern states. Particular focus is given to the ways in which racial attitudes, specifically those of whites towards African Americans, can possibly be explained by theoretical concepts dealing with negative group feelings, principled objections, and simple self-interests.
