For this purpose, described the behaviour of the population changes for a century (1950-2050) in the world, in Latin America and the Caribbean and Colombia, highlighting the changes in demographic indicators. This thinking led to the conclusion that the opportunities, challenges and concerns posed by the aging population in the XXI century will be afactor in the development of peoples, they will face a decline infertility and increased life expectancy, causing changes in population structure, increasing demands on health services and economic systems and social security to meet increased demand with new family structures and inter generational relations, but will increase the productive workforce potential contributors of the two systems. Con un enfoque demográfico, esta reflexión buscó evidenciar los retos, oportunidades, transformaciones y preocupaciones que supone el envejecimiento de las poblaciones, lo cual obliga a una visión integral del fenómeno desde diferentes ámbitos. Para ello se describió el comportamiento de las transformaciones poblacionales durante un siglo (1950-2050) en el mundo, en América Latina y el Caribe y en Colombia, evidenciando los cambios en algunos indicadores demográficos.
