        Objective: The descriptive and cross-sectional study was done to evaluate patients' sleep quality and to determine factors affecting sleep in surgery clinics. Material and Methods: The sampling group was formed by 107 patients who were selected with random sampling method in a surgery clinic of a university hospital in Istanbul between April 2010 and April 2011. Data were collected by face to face interviews with the Patient Information Form, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and The Form of The Factors Affecting Sleep. Data analysis was performed with frequency, percentage, arithmetic mean, standard deviation, median, minimum, maximum, Mann-Whitney U, Kruskal-Wallis, Bonferroni Adjusted Mann-Whitney Spearman's rho correlation tests were used. Results: It was found that 52.3% of the patients in research were female, the average age was 55.57 years. 55.1% of the patients' sleep quality was poor according to PSQI. In the component of PSQI; subjective sleep quality score was 1.38 (SD=0.59), sleep latency score was 1.22 (SD=0.90), sleep disturbance score was 1.19 (SD=0.81), sleep duration score was 0.85 (SD=1.24), daytime dysfunction score was 0.54 (SD=0.87), sleep efficiency score was 0.45 (SD=0.86), use of sleep medication score was 0.10 (SD=0.31). It was found that The Form of The Factors Affecting Sleep score of 80.59 (SD=16.75) points. It was determined that pain (37.4%), poor ventilation of hospital rooms (32.7%) and noise (24.3%) were in the first three factors affecting patients' sleep during hospitalization. Variable the number of patients' hospitalization day affected global PSQI score. Conclusion: Hospitalization and the disease process was the main factors affecting patients' sleep activity as well as patients' sleep was affected from many negative factors during hospitalization and the longer patients stayed in hospital, the worse their sleep quality had. For this reason, the nurses should do initial and continuous assessment about sleep activity and they should diagnose and solved sleep problems.
        Amaç: Bu araştırma, bir üniversite hastanesinin cerrahi kliniğinde yatan hastaların uyku kalitesini değerlendirerek uyku durumunu etkileyen etmenleri belirlemek amacı ile tanımlayıcı ve kesitsel türde yapılmıştır. Gereç ve Yöntemler: Araştırma kapsamına, İstanbul ilinde bir üniversite hastanesinin cerrahi kliniğinde Nisan 2010-Nisan 2011 tarihleri arasında yatan hastalar arasından rastgele örnekleme yöntemi ile seçilen 107 hasta alınmıştır. Veriler, Hasta Tanıtım Formu, Pittsburgh Uyku Kalitesi İndeksi (PUKİ) ve Uyku Düzenini Etkileyen Etmenler Formu (UDEEF) aracılığı ile yüz yüze görüşülerek toplanmıştır. Verilerin analizinde, frekans, yüzde, aritmetik ortalama, standart sapma, ortanca, minimum, maksimum, Mann-Whitney U, Kruskal Wallis, Bonferroni Adjusted Mann-Whitney, Spearman’s rho Korelasyon testleri kullanılmıştır. Bulgular: Araştırma kapsamına alınan hastaların %52,3'ü kadın olup yaş yılı ortalaması 55,57 yıldır (SS=14,43). Hastaların %55,1'inin uyku kalitesinin PUKİ'ye göre kötü olduğu, PUKİ’nin bileşenleri olan; ortalama olarak uyku bozukluğundan 1,38 (SS=0,59), uyku latensinden 1,22 (SS=0,90), öznel uyku kalitesinden 1,19 (SS=0,81), uyku süresinden 0,85 (SS=1,24), gündüz işlev bozukluğundan 0,54 (SS=0,87), alışılmış uyku etkinliğinden 0,45 (SS=0,86), uyku ilacı kullanımından 0,10 (SS=0,31) puan alındığı ve UDEEF’den ise ortalama 80,59 (SS=16,75) puan aldıkları belirlenmiştir. Hasta- ların hastane ortamında uykularını olumsuz etkileyen ilk üç sıradaki faktörün ağrının olması (%37,4), odanın havasız olması (%32,7) ve çevredeki gürültüler (%24,3) olduğu saptanmıştır. Hastaların hastanede yattığı gün sayısının global PİKU puanını etkilediği belirlenmiştir. Sonuç: Hastaneye yatış ve hastalık sürecinin uyku aktivitesini etkileyen başlıca etmenler olmasının yanı sıra hastaneye yatış sırasında hasta- ların uykusu olumsuz birçok faktörden etkilenmekte ve hastanede yatış süresi uzadıkça uyku kalitesi kötüleşmektedir. Bu nedenle hemşireler başlangıç/kabul tanılamasının yanı sıra sürekli tanılama yaparak uyku sorunlarını saptamalı ve çözümlemelidir.
