| Sumario: | While the term differentiations is appropriate for both the pattern perception task and the tasks in the Witkm battery used here, the functional meaning of the term appears to be different for these two types of tasks. In pattern perception, responses to the Pr pattern may reflect two levels of differentiation but differentiation is defined largely in stimulus terms, because variations in the probability of differentiated or homogeneous responses can be predicted fairly accurately by changing the amount of differentiation in the stimulus, i e, differences between spaces and the length of exposure duration. Stimulus determinants of perceptual differentiation were specified in terms of the presence of spacing differences in a pattern and mcreasmg exposure duration. Thus, probability of correctly identifying a line of paired (Pr) dots increased as a function of exposure duration. At brief exposures, the Pr pattern was, as predicted, less accurately identified than an evenly spaced line of dots (Ev).
