      ab: In this article, the author discusses the design law of "form follows function," first coined by the American architect Louis Sullivan in the late 19th-century. More specifically, the author explores the law's seeming dilemma, given that the reuse, repurposing or upcycling of existing products sometimes reveal functions not anticipated by the original designer. Various examples are presented, including the design of medieval English maces, to demonstrate that the analogy between natural and artificial forms may mislead any analysis of Sullivan’s law.
