He notes that the diabolically-possessed called God's mother the wide woman because of her rule over the world, and that the epithet for Mary became standard utterance in diagnosing the demoniac in Europe in the eighteenth century. The author states that the wide woman was a term that the devil spoke, but its interpretation proved wide enough to include blasphemy and piety. |
