Sumario:The article focuses on the history of poor white people in the southern U.S. states and their value of whiteness. The author analyzes the social, cultural, and economic developments during the early 19th century that widened the gap between white social classes, explores how upward mobility became more difficult throughout the antebellum era, and compares poor whites with yeomen. He also discusses the concept of herrenvolk democracy.
