He also accumulated a large library of printed books, books with maps, loose maps, portolan charts, manuscript maps and manuscript texts. The aim in this article is to arrive at an estimate of the size of his library at the time of his death in 1598. The focus is on his maps and books, information for which comes primarily from Ortelius himself. Unusually for the time, Ortelius recorded his cartographical sources and the books and authors he consulted for his maps and writings in aCatalogus auctorum, but much can also be discovered from the texts on the verso of the maps in theTheatrum orbis terrarum, and from theSynonymiaandThesauri, his correspondence and the ledgers in the Plantin Moretus Museum, in which Ortelius’s transactions with Christophe Plantin were recorded. Some of Ortelius’s library books, identified by his signature, have survived. From all these sources it is estimated that Ortelius owned about 5,965 maps and 3,514 books written by about 2,892 authors, making his library one of the largest, if not the largest, private collection of books and maps in sixteenth-century Europe. Es bien sabido que gradualmente, a lo largo de su vida, Ortelius llenó su casa con importantes colecciones de diversas formas de arte. También acumuló una gran biblioteca de libros impresos, libros con mapas, mapas sueltos, cartas náuticas, mapas y textos manuscritos. El objetivo de este artículo es alcanzar una estimación del tamaño de su biblioteca en el momento de su muerte en 1598. La atención se centra en sus mapas y libros, cuya información proviene principalmente del propio Ortelius. Le but de cet article est d’obtenir une estimation de la taille de cette bibliothèque au moment de sa mort en 1598. On s’intéresse principalement à ses cartes et ses livres, pour lesquels les informations proviennent essentiellement d’Ortelius lui-même. De façon inhabituelle pour l’époque, Ortelius consigna ses sources cartographiques, les livres et les auteurs consultés pour ses cartes et ses écrits dans unCatalogus auctorum,mais on peut en découvrir beaucoup d’autres dans les textes au verso des cartes duTheatrum orbis terrarum, dans lesSynonymiaetThesauri,ainsi que dans sa correspondance et ses livres de compte conservés au Musée Plantin Moretus, dans lesquels sont enregistrées les transactions entre Ortelius et Christophe Plantin. Certains des livres de la bibliothèque d’Ortelius, identifiés par sa signature, ont survécu. A partir de toutes ces sources, on estime qu’Ortelius possédait environ 5,965 cartes et 3,514 livres écrits par quelque 2,892 auteurs, faisant de sa bibliothèque l’un des plus grandes, si ce n’est la plus grande collection privée de livres et de cartes de l’Europe du 16e siècle. Es ist allgemein bekannt, dass Ortelius im Laufe seines Lebens sein Haus mit bedeutenden Sammlungen verschiedener Kunstgattungen anfüllte. Außerdem trug er eine große Bibliothek an gedruckten Büchern, Büchern mit Karten, Einzelkarten, Portolankarten, Manuskriptkarten und Handschriften zusammen. Ziel dieses Beitrages ist es, den Umfang dieser Bibliothek zum Zeitpunkt seines Todes 1598 zu ermitteln. Das Augenmerk liegt auf seinen Karten und Büchern, zu denen vor allem Ortelius selbst Informationen hinterlassen hat. Ortelius gab – ungewöhnlich für seine Zeit – die kartographischen Quellen und die Bücher und Autoren, die er für die Arbeit an seinen Karten und Texten verwendete, in einem Catalogus Auctorum bekannt. Viele Informationen können allerdings auch in den Rückentexten der Karten im Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, den Synonymia und den Thesauri entdeckt werden sowie seiner Korrespondenz und den Verlagsunterlagen im Plantin Moretus Museum entnommen werden, in denen Ortelius geschäftliche Angelegenheiten mit Christophe Plantin festgehalten wurden. Einige Bücher aus der Bibliothek des Ortelius sind erhalten und lassen sich aufgrund seiner Unterschrift dieser zuweisen. Aus all diesen Quellen kann geschätzt werden, dass Ortelius etwa 5,965 Karten und 3,514 Bücher von 2,892 Autoren besaß, so dass seine Bibliothek als eine der größten, wenn nicht als größte private Bücher- und Kartensammlung des 16.
