The advantages of liquid-based cytology compared with conventional cytology are discussed. Advances in human papillomavirus (HPV) testing and developments in immunocytochemistry are reviewed. Finally, the authors discuss their experience in the application of Lean Six Sigma principles to the cytopathology laboratory.
