      ab: Objective: to find ideas about how to prepare future healthcare professionals for interprofessional work with culturally diverse patients. Design: a critical review of a baseline of published research in interprofessional and intercultural available literature. Material and methods: Peer-reviewed articles were identified through computerized searches during the last ten years. We used search terms such as "cultural diversity in interprofessional learning," "interprofessional education and transcultural knowledge," "cross-cultural settings and interprofessional education/learning" and "intercultural settings and interprofessional education/learning. Results: Only two studies addressing the combination of interprofessional and intercultural training were found. They demonstrated that professional skills are often gained outside the traditional curricula and that barriers to communication with foreign-born patients may be reduced by new tools. Virtual learning systems might be a useful tool for this. A virtual patient (VP) case can emulate a problem-learning scenario in this context to support students in active learning to train clinical problem solving of culturally diverse patients. VP scenarios may be reentered and revisited an unlimited number of times, providing opportunities to learn from mistakes in order to reach better understanding. Feedback from VPs might improve the patient- management process. Conclusions: The data reveal a field in its infancy. Additional studies focusing on interprofessional and intercultural learning with new tools, e.g., VPs are needed.
