Frequently, those writings pointed out the reasons that had led several governments to enact edicts of toleration and even manifested favourable opinions about them. Furthermore, they would stress the positive effects of freedom of conscience on economic and demographic growth. En la España del siglo XVIII, la censura inquisitorial impedía defender públicamente la tolerancia, pero no pudo evitar que diversos periódicos, novelas, libros de viaje y obras geográficas e históricas incluyesen referencias a la libertad religiosa de otros países. En ocasiones, estos escritos señalaban los motivos que llevaban a los gobiernos extranjeros a promulgar edictos de tolerancia e incluso expresaban opiniones favorables a dichas leyes.
