The invocation of God's name,which appears in almost all Brazilian Federal Constitutions, is one of the main reasons brought forward to justify and legitimate the presence of the religious in the public space. As it will be seen further, this controversy reveals the divergence of positioning about the relations between State and Religion. This also expresses different conceptions about the role and the place of religion in the legal and in brazilian constitution system and in the own social life and politics. Neste artigo busco descrever e analisar os debates e enfretamentos que ocorreram ao longo da história brasileira por conta da inclusão do nome de Deus no preâmbulo da Constituição Federal. A invocação do nome de Deus, presente em quase todas as constituições federais brasileiras, é uma das principais razões apresentadas para justificar e legitimar a presença do religioso nos espaços públicos. Como será visto, esta controvérsia revela divergentes posicionamentos acerca das relações entre Estado e religião.
