Introduction: Magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) is a non-invasive examination which enables identification and quantification of metabolites in tissues. Compared to conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), MRS provides physiological and biochemical information on the composition of tissues in the body by presenting metabolites in the magnetic resonance spectra. Purpose: The purpose of this article is to show relative concentrations of lactate in the vastus medialis muscle on the MR spectra before, immediately after and one hour after physical exercise. Methods: Review of current literature and implementation of MRS in the vastus medialis muscles in five physically well-prepared athletes by using the STEAM pulse sequence. Measurements were conducted on a magnetic resonance tomograph Philips Achieva 3.0T TX at the Centre of Clinical Physiology at the Faculty of Medicine. Results: In four out of five participants, the MR spectra showed a significant increase of lactate immediately after the exercise and a decrease after one hour, compared to the lactate levels before the physical exercise. Discussion and conclusion: Literature review showed fluctuations in lactate levels – from lower levels while resting to higher levels after exercise, which is in line with our findings.
