However, as this debate intensifies in modern Western academia, there has been no large-scale application of philosophical analysis to literature, particularly with respect to classical Ottoman divan literature. This article is an attempt to fill that gap in the field by analyzing traditional archetypes of divan literature-namely, the âşâk (lover), maşûk (beloved) and rakîb (opponent)-to show the existence of dialectical discourse in Ottoman love poems written between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Divan poems in both style and content display a comprehensive understanding of the post-classical Ottoman philosophical conception of dialectic and argumentation theory, known as âdâbü'l-bahs ve'l-münâzara. The focus on Ottoman love poetry and argumentation theory in this paper aims to demonstrate: (a) how the literature that developed in Ottoman culture in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries is more dialectical in form and content than Ottoman literary studies have revealed until now, and (b) that philosophy and literature are not fully distinct entities. Bu makalede, Osmanlı aşk şiiri ve argümantasyon teorisine odaklanılmasının amacı: (a) 15 ve 16. yüzyıllarda Osmanlı kültüründe gelişen edebiyatın, biçim ve öz bakımından, bugüne kadar Osmanlı edebiyatı üzerine yapılmış çalışmaların ortaya koyduğundan daha diyalektik olduğunu ve (b) felsefe ve edebiyatın tümüyle ayrı alanlar olmadığını göstermektir pubtype: Academic Journal doctype: Article src: R language: English refInfo: copyright: @attributes: flag: Y custom: Copyright of Journal of Turkish Literature is the property of Bilkent University, Center for Turkish Literature and its content may not be copied or emailed to multiple sites without the copyright holder's express written permission.
