Both are examples of Poniatowska’s biographical reportages or profiles within her literary journalism. I also study Poniatowska’s reportages as hybrid genres that are, at the same time, essays, chronicles, biographies and even short stories, as the author sometimes includes also fiction. All these characteristics together with the use of polyphony, the perfect combination of text and image, and the exercise of literary criticism allow Poniatowska to offer a totalizing representation of Carlos Fuentes. Also, the similarities between the works of the two writers are studied following Poniatowska’s analysis of Fuentes’ works. En este artículo analizo ‘¡Si tuviera cuatro vidas, cuatro vidas serían para ti!’ y ‘El afán totalizador’, dos textos que Elena Poniatowska dedica a Carlos Fuentes, como ejemplos de reportajes biográficos o perfiles dentro del periodismo literario de la autora. Estudio también el reportaje poniatowskiano como género híbrido que es al mismo tiempo ensayo, crónica, biografía e incluso relato, ya que en ocasiones se recurre también a la ficción. Todas estas características junto al uso de otras técnicas como la polifonía, la perfecta armonía de las imágenes con el texto escrito y el ejercicio de la crítica literaria permiten a Poniatowska ofrecer una representación totalizadora de Carlos Fuentes.
