| Sumario: | The author, a professor of political science in Caracas, holds that Venezuela is experiencing the agony of populism, as other Latin American countries have, but the process is taking longer. Democracy was established there in 1958, but by 1982, it was in shambles, in spite of abundant oil revenues. Public opinion is fragmented, and political myths prevent the people from understanding the real causes of the crisis. The people look to a Messiah to save them. Too much emphasis is placed on corruption as the cause of the crisis. Venezuela shows the vulnerability of democracy in challenging situations. The current Caldera government has further undermined the rule of law. |
