Summary:	An essay is presented on the novel "The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao," by Junot Díaz, which documents the regime of dictator Rafael Trujillo from 1930 to 1961 in the Dominican Republic. The engagement of the novel with Mario Vargas Llosa's novel "La fiesta del chivo" which also deals with the dictatorship of Trujillo is examined. The criticism of Díaz on Vargas Llosa's depiction of Trujillo is discussed.
