His is not the big, dominating personality often associated with chief executives of big companies. "He may seem mild and self-effacing, but his judgement and views of books are very strongly held," says Peter Carson, Kidd's acknowledged editorial mentor, for whom he worked as assistant editor when Carson was editor-in-chief of publishing company Penguin. The son of an American businessman, Kidd attended the American School in London, to which he returned as a teacher after reading English literature and creative writing at the Brown University on Rhode Island. Kidd had an ambition to be a novelist. He joined a job as editorial assistant to Kate Jones at publishing company Hamish Hamilton. Kidd is a great believer in mentoring.
