| Sumario: | Este artículo propone discutir, a partir de evidencias principalmente documentales y en menor medida arqueológicas, si existió un término específico para enunciar a los habitantes del valle de Copiapó, en el Norte Chico chileno. Para ello, retomamos fuentes chilenas, peruanas y bolivianas provenientes de los siglos XVI y XVII, para intentar comprender qué significó en su momento hablar de Copiapoes, Copoyapos o Copayapós, puesto que estos etnónimos representaron acepciones diferentes en función de la época y el lugar en que fueron utilizados. El objetivo es plasmar líneas reflexivas e hipotéticas a la espera de nuevos datos sobre estos grupos.
ABSTRACT
This article intends to discuss, from mainly documentary evidence and archaeological lesser extent, if there was a specific term to enunciate the inhabitants of the valley of Copiapo in theChilean Norte Chico. For this purpose, we have analyzed Chilean, Peruvian and Bolivian sources from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, to try to understand what it meant at the time to talk about Copiapoes, Copoyapos or Copayapós, since these ethnonyms represented different meanings depending on the time and place they were used. The purpose is to translate reflexive and hypothetical lines waiting for new data on these groups.
