Although his inter-est is concentrated in current processes, he considers necessary to present a historical revision to recover both the process of creation and consolidation of these preservation units, as well as the modalities that tourism was acquiring in their use. In this tour, presents the relationships that this valorisation establishes with the social contexts in which it is inscribed, as well as with the ideas and representations of nature, preservation and tourism that support this valorisation.For the current context, it recognizes two main routes or perspectives of tourist valorisation of preserved nature. One of them is fully inscribed in the coordinates of the global economy, hav-ing market interventions as a priority instrument. The other is oriented towards local and partic-ipatory development, having as a general framework the principles of sustainability. In both, achievements and limitations are observed, and presented synthetically in relation to the cur-rent expectations regarding tourism as a driver of development in general and for the places and populations involved. |

El texto tiene por objetivo analizar la valorización turística de la naturaleza sujeta a instancias de preservación, en las denominadas en general áreas de protección ambiental, en América Latina. Si bien su interés se concentra en los procesos actuales, considera necesario presentar un recorrido histórico en el que recupera tanto el proceso de creación y consolidación de estas unidades de preservación, como las modalidades que el turismo fue adquiriendo en su aprove-chamiento. En este recorrido presenta las relaciones que esta valorización establece con los contextos sociales en los que se inscribe, como asimismo con las ideas y representaciones de la naturaleza, la preservación y el turismo que avalan dicha valorización. Para el contexto actual, reconoce dos grandes vías o perspectivas de valorización turística de la naturaleza preservada. Una de ellas se inscribe plenamente en las coordenadas de la economía global, teniendo a las intervenciones de mercado como instrumento priorizado. La otra se orienta hacia el desarrollo local y participativo, teniendo como marco general los principios de la sustentabilidad. En ambas se observan logros y limitaciones, que son expuestos de manera sintética y en relación con las expectativas vigentes en torno al turismo como impulsor del desarrollo en general y, en particular, para los lugares y poblaciones involucrados.
