La presente, es una reseña del libro La puerta del desierto: Estado y región en Atacama. Taltal, 1850-1900, del autor Milton Godoy Orellana, enmarcado en el proyecto de Fondecyt, “Construcción de estado nacional y región en el septentrión minero: Taltal 1860-1910”, centrado en el proceso de expansión y consolidación estatal en la frontera septentrional chilena entre 1860 y 1910, analizando criticamente las relaciones cotidianas suscitadas entre particulares, las agencias del Estado y sus políticas en la región de Taltal, desdibujando asi al mirada historiográfica tradicional de dicho proceso.
