La acentuada disminución demográfica de la población indígena y la reducción de sus tierras de resguardo en el nororiente del Nuevo Reino de Granada, durante los siglos XVII y XVIII, aceleraron de manera paulatina la desbandada de estas comunidades ancestrales, siendo cada vez mayor el número de indios ausentes y forajidos que pasaban a vivir en las estancias y en las casas de blancos y mestizos o en los núcleos urbanos de las ciudades, villas y parroquias que eran, en su orden, las principales categorías del poblamiento español en auge. En ese contexto, este artículo tiene como propósito examinar las consecuencias de dicha dispersión indígena y su presencia creciente en los territorios ocupados por blancos y mestizos, lo cual a su vez se constituyó en una variable que influyó en la desarticulación y dispersión de aquellas comunidades, así como también en su vertiginoso proceso de miscegenación.
