Este artículo propone examinar las tensiones y conflictos en el Servicio de Identificación Chileno alrededor de la Identificación de los Recién Nacidos. Esta originó dos bandos: los dactilóscopos y los papilóscopos. Los primeros defensores de la Dactiloscopía, originada en La Plata, Argentina, y los segundos, la Papiloscopía, creada por Humberto Orrego Gauthier, sistema de recambio, que garantizaría dar solución integral al problema de la identificación humana. Mediante Revistas Institucionales, Obras especializadas, y documentos inéditos[1], problematizaremos la idea que la Identificación, como práctica ya institucionalizada, conllevó tensiones, competencias y rivalidades entre sus cultores técnicos [1] Especial agradecimiento al sr. Clodomiro José Cabezas Dávalos hijo de Clodomiro Cabezas Cabezas, Jefe del Servicio de Identificación entre 1927 y 1931, quien ha guardado y atesorado una serie de documentos personales de su padre, de tremendo valor histórico para los estudios sobre la Identificación, la Policía y la Administración Pública en Chile.
