Este artículo estudia la relación entre acequias, higiene urbana y epidemias que afectaron a la Provincia de Santiago a fines del siglo XIX e inicios del XX. Caracteriza las condiciones y modos de vida de vida de sus habitantes, analiza los factores que impactaron en la higiene de las acequias y examina gestión del agua en un sentido amplio. También considera la reacción del Estado chileno y la sociedad santiaguina frente al riesgo de contagio de cólera y fiebre bubónica. Las fuentes que sostienen este trabajo emanan de la Intendencia de Santiago, testimonios de profesionales y prensa de la época.
