En este artículo se analiza el caso de “sublevación y saqueo por parte de peones chilenos en las oficinas Carolina y Porvenir”. Estas salitreras de Máquina estaban localizadas al interior de los puertos de Pisagua y Junín (Provincia de Tarapacá), cuyos propietarios eran empresas dominantes, la Casa Gibbs Cª y la Compañía tarapaqueña Lafuente y Sobrino, respectivamente. Se plantea mediante un análisis historiográfico de fuentes primarias (prensa) y secundarias (bibliografía) que este sería uno de los primeros indicios de protesta obrera que los periódicos solían confundir con delincuencia común o con conflictos de nacionalidades. Estas rebeliones se generaron debido al cambio arbitrario de los salarios de los trabajadores, supuestamente producto de la crisis económica de 1867.
